From the South Bend Tribune:
Two counties prefer move to Central time In separate meetings, commissioners in Sullivan and Vermillion counties voted to ask the U.S. Department of Transportation to place the western Indiana counties in the Central time zone. Tuesday's votes followed discussion from residents who said the switch would be good for businesses and for children who wait for school buses in the morning. "The sun rises a lot different in Sullivan County than it does in New York or Ohio," said Scott Brown of Sullivan, who works at Toyota Motor Manufacturing Indiana's Gibson County plant. Vermillion County Commission President Tim Wilson said no one at Tuesday's meeting wanted to stay in the Eastern time zone and observe daylight-saving time next year. "We had several letters, all in favor of Central time," Wilson said. Five counties in the northwest corner of the state and five others in the southwest are in the Central time zone. Indiana's other 82 counties are on Eastern time, and the state is to begin observance of daylight-saving time next spring. Counties have until Sept. 16 to request a time-zone change. The federal government will review the petitions and conduct public hearings on the proposals |
