Consider time decision at the regional level

Regarding the July 19 editorial, "We deserved chance to be heard on time," Gov. Mitch Daniels did indeed mislead Hoosiers into thinking that Indiana's time zone would be fairly debated. Though he was right to push for daylight-saving time, this change only made sense geographically and economically in tandem with a statewide switch to Central time.

I hope, for example, that there will one day be a regional, high-speed rail line (with multiple daily trips) between Indianapolis and Chicago. Such a connection would make far more sense if both cities were on the same time. Sheer distance would preclude any similar rail connection to New York.

Indiana should embrace its Midwestern location and realize that our time zone is an issue of long-term regional importance. Time boundaries should not be decided on the county level.
